Vicki Lynn Williams-Patterson, LPC-AT, ATR-BC
Licensed Professional Counselor
Board Certified Art Therapist

I have been in practice as an art therapist since 1983. My graduate education placed significant importance in developmental psychology, and I have continued with that orientation. For the past 16 years, I have been conducting seminars on the therapeutic uses of art in the counseling process. I have presented at both regional and international conferences. Since receiving my MCAT, I have continued in informal training in the areas of trauma recovery, Jungian psychology, and sandplay therapy. In 1990 I began getting additional training in play therapy. I have actively sought training from my peers through various study and supervision groups in the areas of play therapy and trauma recovery.
My primary teachers, both in symbols and in the intricacies of psychological development, have been my clients. From ages three (3) to sixty-three, my clients have been telling me their dreams, making sand trays, playing out dramas, and creating art with me. The broad range of their ages along with the richness of their creative expressions have given me a unique understanding of the symbols of transformation in the healing process.

Art Therapy: Deeper Than Words

Since art therapy is a blending of art making and psychotherapy, it can appear superficially similar to a wide variety of other fields, from art education to play therapy to occupational, recreational, and activity therapy. The simple creative process of making an expressive drawing can do much to support the ego, foster the development of a sense of identity, and promote maturation in general. Art therapy is a very special method of facilitating self expression as well as developing a deeper understanding of oneself. The art therapist is concerned with the individual's inner experience as they express themselves creatively. Process, form, content, and/ or associations are seen as reflections of psychological development, personality traits and the unconscious
