DOMAIN NAME FORWARDING

A member can obtain a unique internet address and have it forwarded to the address of his or her member's page. All members' pages that are hosted on the South Texas Art Therapy Server have an address in the form of http://www.stxarttherapy.org/filename.htm. The filename is whatever the webmaster has named the member's page file, such as "mwheeler" or "phylisartworks".

Members who want to use the internet addresses of their members' pages on their business cards or in business correspondence may prefer to have shorter, unique internet addresses such as http://www.myname.com. This new address can then be linked to the existing member's page on the South Texas Art Therapy website. Here's how to do it:

(1) Register a Domain Name. The "myname.com" portion of the desired new internet address is known as the "Domain Name". This is a unique name that, when registered, cannot be used by anyone else. There are hundreds of companies that provide domain name registration services for a small fee. Just Google "Domain Name Registration" and you will see how many there are. Select one based on the lowest fee. These are given on the companies' websites. Some representative fees are in the range of $6.99 to $10 per year.

Once you've picked a domain name registering company, go to its website and search for the domain name you want, such as "janedoe.com". No spaces, please, and the .com is the most used suffix for commercial sites. Non-profits usually use .org. If the domain name you want is available, register it and pay the fee via credit card. If the domain name you want is already taken, search for slight variations of it that are available.

(2) Forward the Domain Name to your South Texas Art Therapy member's page internet address. After registering your domain name and paying the fee, the registering company will give you its administration website address, a login name and a password. Go to that website, login, and select "manage domains" or "my account" or "my domains". Look for a link such as "select destination" or "forward your domain" or "manage domain forwarding" and select it. Enter the internet address to which you want your new internet address forwarded which will be in the form "http://www.stxarttherapy.org/filename.htm". Check with the webmaster to get the correct filename if you don't know it or it hasn't been established yet. After entering the forwarding address you may need to select "move permanently" or "http redirect" if asked. Type OK to save.
